World Wetlands Day 2018

It’s #WorldWetlandsDay!

This year the theme is Wetlands for a Sustainable Urban Future.

Urban wetlands play an important role in making cites livable and sustainable and they need to be a part of planning and development projects. 4 billion people, about half of the world’s population live in cities today and by 2050 that number will increase. Cities need to adopt policies and actions which help conserve and promote urban wetlands and the biodiversity that utilise that ecosystem.

Take the opportunity today to learn a little bit more about urban wetlands and the impact they have on cities! Through environmental awareness and education we can all make a difference so find a wetland project near you and find out how you can get involved!

World Wetlands Day 2018 aims to raise awareness about how urban wetlands contribute to the future of sustainable cities.

Hello! I'm Hiral, a herpetologist and conservationist with a focus on snake ecology, conservation and education. I am currently a PhD student in the Alexander Herp Lab in South Africa. My research focuses on better understanding venomous snakes and their role in snakebite. I was born in Zimbabwe, currently live in South Africa, and living in Africa has largely inspired my passion for nature and wildlife. My interests are broad, spanning from conservation biology, herpetology, technology, communications, field biology and finding new ways to save species and their habitats.
